Antebellum streets with two-hundred-year-old hardwoods over them, and a lake full of properties where the wind comes across open water. Milledgeville is its own kind of tree work.
Milledgeville was Georgia's capital from 1804 until 1868, and the town still looks the part. The original grid is laid out around the old statehouse square, the Old Governor's Mansion has stood since 1839, and the historic district is full of houses that were standing before the Civil War. Georgia College sits in the middle of it, the Oconee runs along the edge of town, and Baldwin County spreads out into some of the most heavily wooded ground in Middle Georgia.
What that history means for tree work is age. The hardwoods shading those antebellum streets were planted generations ago — water oaks, willow oaks, pecans and magnolias that have had a hundred and fifty years to get large. They're magnificent, and they are also at a stage of life where decay is routine rather than exceptional. Taking one down beside a house that predates the Civil War is not a job you rush, and it's the kind of work we take seriously.
Then there's Lake Sinclair. Georgia Power impounded the Oconee in 1953 and created fifteen thousand acres of water with several hundred miles of shoreline, and the lots around it have been building out ever since. Lakefront trees live a harder life than the same tree two miles inland. Wind comes across open water with nothing to slow it, shoreline soil stays wet and gives up its grip sooner, and the pines along those banks lean out toward the light over the water until gravity takes an interest. Add a dock, a boathouse and a seawall underneath, and the margin for error on a removal gets thin.
JC's Tree & Stump Removal works Baldwin County regularly out of our base in Macon, about half an hour down Highway 49. We've been at it since January 2022, we're a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating, and JC Henry runs the jobs himself — the man who prices your tree is the man taking it down. For storm work and anything unsafe we answer around the clock.
The jobs in Milledgeville tend to come in two shapes: careful removals in tight historic lots where there's nowhere to drop anything, and lakefront work where everything has to be rigged away from a dock or a deck. Both are the kind where the cleanup matters as much as the cutting, and that's the part our customers talk about — one wrote after seven removals that "it looked like there were never any trees there." "JC and his team took down 60 or so dead and dying eastern cedar trees between 30 and 50 feet tall. They cut, hauled and cleaned up all of the trees and under-brush in one day. I have used JC before and both times the work was excellent and his fees were very reasonable. He is my tree guy!!"

"JC and his crew did a great job getting the massive tree that fell during the storm. They were very helpful and worked hard to make sure myself and my neighbor were happy with the end results, and all of my property — trailers and fence — that were buried by the tree were protected while they worked. Will use JC's Tree Service again!"

What Milledgeville and Baldwin County property owners ask us most.
Regularly. We're based in Macon, about half an hour away down Highway 49, and Baldwin County is a normal part of our working area. Call with the property address and you'll get a straight answer on scheduling right away.
Yes, and those need a plan before anybody starts cutting. A tree leaning out over water with a dock underneath has to come down in pieces rigged back toward the land, not dropped. Tell us what's below it — dock, boathouse, seawall, boat lift — when you call, and send a photo if you can.
Three reasons. Wind comes across open water with nothing to break it, so shoreline trees take loads that inland trees never see. Saturated bank soil holds roots less firmly. And trees along a shoreline lean out toward the open light over the water, which puts their weight exactly where you don't want it. It's a genuinely tougher spot to be a tree.
It's the reason to hire carefully rather than cheaply. A removal next to an old structure comes down in small controlled sections with anything over the building lowered on a rope. Older houses are also less forgiving of impact than modern framing. Tell us what you're working next to and we'll plan accordingly.
Worth having looked at, not worth panicking over. Water oaks and willow oaks of that age commonly decay from the inside while the crown still looks full, so the outside appearance isn't a reliable guide. Signs worth a call: mushrooms or conks at the base, a hollow sound when you knock the trunk, bark shedding in sheets, or large dead limbs up top.
Yes, 24 hours. Baldwin County gets the same summer thunderstorm lines and occasional Gulf remnants as the rest of Middle Georgia, and the lake properties tend to take it hardest. Call and tell us what's down and what it's on.
